The five Great Lakes are Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, Lake Erie and Lake Ontario. They are easy to spot when looking at a map. Just look at the top of the eastern United States. Do you see the five Great Lakes? Lake Superior looks like a wolf’s head. Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, and Lake Erie form the outline of a mitten. Lake Michigan is the only lake in the United States. The other four lakes are in both the United States and Canada. You can see on the map that the five lakes are connected. The Great Lakes are busy. Some people just look at the lakes. One of the famous sights is the Niagara Falls. There, water from Lake Erie falls over 300 feet into Lake Ontario. It is a beautiful part of the Great Lakes. Other people come to the lakes to fish and play. Many people earn a living working on or near the lakes. Many people work in factories that make steel. Other people living nearby grow wheat. The steel and wheat are loaded onto ships. Since the lakes are linked, the ships can sail from the Great Lakes to the Atlantic Ocean. They can take the steel and wheat to any place in the world. So the Great Lakes are important for many reasons. They have special sights. They provide places to play and fish for fun. But they are also important to business. Ships use the lakes as waterways to carry wheat and steel. Fishermen catch fish. The moving water makes energy. Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, Lake Huron, Lake Erie and Lake Ontario are “great” lakes!
